The Federal Government has announced it will sell off the northern part of the southern Great Barrier Reef after an estimated $7 billion is needed to restore its health.
A taskforce announced the Northern Reef Taskforce yesterday (November 17), which will look at the options for re-establishing what was once a world-class environment.
It's an extraordinary announcement.
I think that's a good message of leadership — Stephen Leese
Great Barrier Reef Environment Association chief executive Stephen Leese says the report will help set the tone for what the future of the reef will be.
"We've certainly seen some great progress this year, we think we can do much more," he said.
"The Northern Reef Taskforce is a real opportunity for the Commonwealth Government to come together with Australian industry and look at the different options."
Mr Leese says the Northern Reef taskforce will consider re-establishing parts of the northern reef - which includes the Great Barrier Reef - with new industries.
"When you're talking about a $7 billion investment, you'd need about 60,000 jobs to do that," he said.
"I think that's a good message of leadership.
"I think it shows that Australia is serious about supporting the region, and is not just looking at this as a resource."
Mr Leese says the government must get the funding to the Northern Reef Taskforce right away.
"I think for all of us, we're not going to put in to 2018 if we don't see a plan on a lot of fronts," he said.
Great Barrier Reef scientists believe that the Northern Reef is currently a healthy part of its ecosystem and the reef is better equipped than ever to withstand major bleaching events, including a serious one that will be expected over the summer.
It says scientists have found evidence that it has the right composition of corals and benthic life to withstand more bleaching events.
The Federal Government says Australia's primary health care and economic benefit will be realized when all the pieces are put together and investment in coral reef infrastructure is paid for and maintained.
The Federal Government says it will offer financial assistance to communities in the Northern Reef Area and areas around the Great Barrier Reef.

Campaign in wentworth gives king satisfaction (GOLDENSTEIN)
"Let me say a word," said the king to his attendants as he stood in his court, "about what you have already told me on one subject. "It is not that I don't enjoy your society at Court. You see, I have been sitting at supper at Versailles, and to-day you see me sitting in the chair of Mr. de la Fayette, and you can see me at table in the drawing-room with my wife."
"You have been seated in the drawing-room with your wife," said de la Fayette.
"Yes."
"Why?"
"She was ill during our first meeting at Versailles; she is always sick at that time of year."
"Is it true that the king does not enjoy the entertainment of the court?"
"I cannot help telling you of one occasion. "You see, one night I had to go to Versailles to carry out business, when the king saw me waiting to be ushered into his house. I said I should like to go alone, and he agreed, so he said he would go to supper with me alone, that night."
"I believe you," said de la Fayette. "I can say no more about this."
"I should like it very much to go alone with you, Mr. de la Fayette, but the circumstances of your illness make it impossible for that to happen. He went to supper with me alone. He has the privilege, then, of seeing you in the drawing-room alone, when there is nothing to see in the sitting room. "
"We do not meet every day," said de la Fayette, "though many times. And we don't all sleep every night; some of us sleep during the day, some of us don't, I think it is true. And we will see each other again as often as that is convenient for us, so that we cannot be too careful about going into the drawing-room alone at night. But you never hear me say of what is convenient or inconvenient; you never mention these things, or if you do, you tell me in a word. How, in fact, do you find you can't sit in your drawing-room alone? To think you are only obliged to sit at dinner when you would not have liked it if you sat in the drawing-room with me? Oh, my God, that is so pitiful! If, in fact, Mr. de la Fayette were not sick, I am sure I should be there with you. What, then, does he want to see me in the dining-room?"
